A group of Grade 9 students peers into a small car

Hagersville Secondary Partners with Haldimand Motors for Annual ‘Stuff Kids in a Car Contest’

As part of a community event, held each year on the first Friday evening in September, Haldimand Motors invited four Haldimand-area secondary schools to compete in a contest to see how many students could fit into a car in one minute.

“This event is a really fun way to kick off the school year, and it’s also a wonderful partnership with a local business,” said Shaun McMahon, Principal at Hagersville Secondary School, which sent a team of Grade 9 students to compete. “It’s a great way for our new students to get involved in the school community, and work together with a clear goal in mind.”

The aptly named Stuff Kids in a Car Contest is a straightforward competition: students on teams from each school must utilize spatial thinking, problem solving, creativity, and communication to fit as many as possible into a small car – in this case, a Mini Cooper. The Hagersville Secondary team had a respectable showing, managing to cram 10 students in the compact hatchback, to take third place. They took home $535 in prize money, which will be directed toward activities the student council has planned for the year.

Recognizing community partners is an important part of Grand Erie’s Multi-Year Plan, which aims to foster and celebrate those partnering businesses, organizations, and non-profits which help enhance students’ learning experiences. All of the prize money was donated by Haldimand Motors to support schools in the area.
