École Dufferin Leaves Their Mark on the TH&B Crossing Bridge

TUESDAY, JAN. 17, 2023

If you’re looking to be inspired, École Dufferin knows just the place. Head over to the TH&B Crossing Bridge in downtown Brantford where you’ll find several panels of student art.

As part of a landmark revitalization project, volunteers submitted mural ideas highlighting local culture, history, people, events and destinations to be painted on the pedestrian bridge overlooking the Grand River.

École Dufferin was selected to paint a sunny landscape on north side panels 8-12, brought to life by a variety of images of animals and colours. Their creation reflects the joy and gratitude felt living in Brantford and the territory of Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. The top of their mural conveys a heartfelt message: “Thank you Grand River - Nous reconnaissons et remercions cette terre - We acknowledge this land - Learn, lead, inspire - Nous apprenons, jouons, et travaillons ensemble.”

“We are grateful our learners had the chance to share their unique voices. During art class, students had the opportunity to reflect and share their appreciation for the land, and all students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 were welcomed to plan and create designs for our mural,” said Andrea Smith, principal at École Dufferin.

Over the span of 10 days in October, students, teachers and parents/caregiver volunteers went out to collaborate. Together, they worked to add designs, paint the background and complete touch-ups.

“We had a very large number of students come from all divisions. I couldn’t even name them all, there were so many,” continued Andrea.

École Dufferin’s contribution to the TH&B Crossing Bridge is a reminder of the power in engaging with community voices and celebrating diversity. Grand Erie is thankful for the opportunity to share our unique perspective and enrich Brantford as a place of learning and belonging, reflecting Grand Erie’s multi-year strategic plan.
