    Indigenous Education

Classrooms across Grand Erie include students from the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, and a number of other Indigenous, First Nation, Métis, and Inuit people in the urban community. It is the goal of the Grand Erie District School Board to provide an enriching school experience that acknowledges and respects the Indigenous communities represented in our schools.

15042.jpgThe Grand Erie District School Board is dedicated to providing culturally responsive services and programs for Indigenous students that will improve the school experience and success for all Indigenous students. Grand Erie encourages the development of strong partnerships with Indigenous families, communities, and organizations.

    National Indigenous Peoples Day

June 21 - Indigenous Peoples Day is held on the summer solstice to celebrate the unique heritage, culture, and achievements of Indigenous people and communities across the country. On this day, there are celebrations across Canada that showcase First Nations, Metis and Inuit people and culture.

    Indigenous Education Areas of Focus

    Achievement
Identify, develop, implement, and review strategies to support First Nation, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) student achievement in collaboration with school and system staff through the Board Improvement Plan.

    Environment
Create learning environments that are engaging, inclusive and culturally relevant to FNMI students, parents and community members.

    Engagement
Establish, maintain, enhance and review partnerships and community relationships that support the unique needs of FNMI students to reach their full potential.

    Well-Being
We will create environments that are healthy and that recognize the well-being of mind, body, emotion and spirit of students and staff.

    Self-Identification

As a way to advise the Grand Erie District School Board that a student is of Indigenous ancestry, a student can self-identify at any time. The form can be completed and returned to the school's principal.
Click here for a Volunteer student self-identification form.

    Six Nations Advisory Committee (SNAC)

The Six Nations Advisory Committee (SNAC) represents Six Nations interests in maintaining quality educational services purchased through the Tuition Agreement and ensures that the Board is appropriately advised in matters related to the education of Six Nations pupils.

    Indigenous Education Advisory Committee (IEAC)

In 2014, through the Ontario First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Education Policy Framework Implementation Plan, the Ministry of Education indicated that all school boards would establish formalized processes, such as establishing Indigenous Education Advisory Committees (IEAC) to support local implementation of the framework.

IEAC would provide guidance to school boards and schools in building stronger relationships with their communities, sharing information, identifying promising practices, and enhancing collaborative work to support First Nation, Métis, and Inuit student achievement and well-being.

Grand Erie District School Board’s IEAC will promote, enhance and improve Indigenous Education for all students.
