Bus driver shortage a potential issue for Grand Erie District School Board families

Transportation Services across the province are experiencing ongoing school bus driver shortages. Our priority at Student Transportation Services in dealing with this potential issue is to ensure that Grand Erie students are safe and that families have access to timely notification of route cancellations or delays.

Bus companies have told us that they are utilizing experienced, spare drivers to help cover routes, however, a shortage of contract drivers as well as driver absenteeism has started to become an issue across the City of Brantford and the Counties of Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk.

We want Grand Erie families to understand that there is a mechanism in place to see if their child(ren)’s transportation is on time, delayed or cancelled. Significant delays can occur as a result of school bus driver shortages, inclement weather, mechanical breakdowns of buses or unusual traffic patterns.

We encourage Grand Erie families to subscribe or check the transportation site daily in order to reduce the chance of their child(ren) waiting at a bus stop unnecessarily. Remember, even if the weather and road conditions are fine, there is a chance you child(ren)’s bus could be delayed or cancelled.

Sincerely,

Philip Kuckyt

Manager of Transportation Services
