Members of the SCS Eco- Club (the Bird Herd) traveled to the Long Point Bird Observatory and Banding Station (http://www.birdscanada.org/longpoint/?targetpg=lpbovisit) to experience the activities associated with the Old Cut Research Station. Students followed the volunteers as they made rounds through the net lanes, removing the birds which would then be identified, aged and weighed. After recording this information, the researchers banded the birds before releasing them into the wild. The information obtained through the banding process helps with population and migration pattern studies all over the Western Hemisphere (some of the birds which stop in Long Point migrate from Central American rain forests into the Boreal forests of Norther Canada). The groups highlight was a young Black-throated Green Warbler, which no one in the group had ever seen before. Special thanks to the volunteers at LPBO for explaining the process and identifying the bird species.
