Scott McDonald, principal at J.L. Mitchener Public School, is this year's recipient of the Patti McCleister Memorial Award, the highest honour bestowed on an employee or group of employees within the Grand Erie District School Board.

“Recipients of the Patti McCleister Memorial Award exemplify the dedication, compassion, and leadership that helps students, families, and colleagues thrive,” said Dr. JoAnna Roberto, Chief Executive Officer. “Through a commitment to building strong relationships and supportive learning environments, they carry forward Patti’s legacy of generosity, resilience, and bringing out the best in those around them.”

On Monday night, Dr. Roberto, along with Patti McCleister's husband, Ted McCleister, Grand Erie's Board of Trustees and Senior Leadership Team, presented the award to McDonald, who was joined by colleagues from J.L. Mitchener Public School, who nominated him for the award.

"Scott doesn’t just lead a school; he nurtures a community built on humanity,

compassion, respect, and heart," read the nomination details, submitted on behalf of the school's staff members. "He exemplifies the values of Grand Erie through genuine, everyday actions, consistently modeling learning, leadership, and inspiration in how he supports both students and staff, guided by integrity, kindness, and a deep commitment to well-being and success."

The nomination details pointed to a number of projects and initiatives McDonald has championed. The Garden to Kitchen project provides hands-on learning experiences that connect gardening, cooking, and cross-curricular learning in math, science, social studies, and health. He also helped establish the school's Skill Building classroom model, creating a collaborative approach to providing targeted support for students with diverse learning needs. His commitment to instructional excellence has enabled educators to participate in further leadership training, and he has supported student leadership through initiatives such as the Harmony Movement and the Words Matter Campaign, helping students foster welcoming, inclusive learning environments.

McDonald began his teaching career in Grand Erie in 1999. He also worked as a teacher consultant in specialized services before moving on to school administration, first as vice-principal at Lakewood Elementary School and River Heights School before becoming principal at J.L. Mitchener Public School in 2022.

Patti McCleister was Grand Erie’s Training and Development Officer, a valuable team member and an inspiration to many. She passed away in 2013 after facing cancer. The award is given annually to the staff member(s) or team who best exemplifies these traits. Recipients are nominated by their co-workers.
