Two Grand Erie District School Board students have been named recipients of this year's James Hillier Foundation scholarship awards, recognizing their academic achievement, extracurricular leadership, and future potential in science, technology and research fields.

Andrew Song, a North Park Collegiate and Vocational School student, and Zorawar Singh, who attends Pauline Johnson Collegiate and Vocational School, each received the scholarship, valued at $28,000, established to honour the legacy of renowned Canadian scientist and inventor Dr. James Hillier, supporting students from Brantford and Brant County as they begin undergraduate studies in scientific and technological disciplines.

"All of my teachers here at PJC have really set me up for success," said Singh, who plans to study mathematical physics at the University of Waterloo this fall, pursuing a field that combines advanced mathematics with fundamental questions in physics. "They've helped me innovate through projects I've pursued and advanced my knowledge beyond the curriculum."

Andrew Song, fellow recipient and graduating North Park Collegiate student, will attend the University of Toronto this fall to study engineering sciences. Reflecting on his journey and offering advice to younger students, Song emphasized the importance of persistence and personal growth.

"It's never too late to start something and to get really good at it," said Song, who hopes to use his education to eventually build biomedical assistive technology. "Work on your habits. It's not about comparing yourself to others; it's about finding your own joy in it."

The scholarship program recognizes students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to learning, leadership, and community involvement. Both recipients have distinguished themselves through their academic accomplishments and are poised to make significant contributions in their chosen fields. As they prepare to begin the next chapter of their education, each exemplifies Grand Erie's mission to learn, lead, and inspire, applying their knowledge, pursuing ambitious goals, and serving as role models for future generations of students.
