The Grand Erie District School Board Trustees approved the 2026-27 budget during the Regular Meeting of the Board on Monday, June 22. The budget will now be submitted to the Ministry of Education.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, this budget represents a collective effort that continues to put student needs at the forefront,” says Brian Doyle, Chair of the Board. “It’s a balance between today's priorities and tomorrow's needs to deliver high-quality education for more than 28,000 students.”

“As we launch our refreshed strategic plan and look ahead to the next four years, the 2026–27 budget enables us to remain focused on improving consistency across Grand Erie and ensuring every learner is supported,” says Dr. JoAnna Roberto, Chief Executive Officer. “Through our budgeting process, we’ve allocated resources to prioritize investments in classrooms while advancing our commitment to student achievement and well-being.”

Budget highlights:

  • The approximate $435 million operating budget has increased by $10 million.
  • Direct classroom instruction represents 70% of total costs, a 2.1% increase.
  • The $21.7 million capital budget includes targeted investments in school facilities, supporting building improvement, site enhancements, renovations, upgrades and critical repairs.
  • Continued investment in permanent, frontline positions that directly support students, including educational assistants, social workers and custodial positions.

“With student enrolment growth beginning to plateau and ongoing cost pressures, this year's budget demonstrates a balanced, responsive approach to fiscal discipline, with an ongoing commitment to student success and well-being,” says Rafal Wyszynski, Superintendent of Business and Treasurer. “I’m proud of the work across Grand Erie to table a balanced budget that invests in frontline employees without the use of reserves.”

The fiscal year for Ontario school boards runs from September 1 to August 31.
