Grand Erie Seeks Community Input to Name New Elementary School in Paris

In January 2025, the Ontario Ministry of Education announced a $26.5 million capital investment for the construction of a Kindergarten to Grade 8 elementary school in Paris. As part of the process, the Grand Erie District School Board is looking for the public’s input into naming the new school.

"As we move forward and get ready to put shovels in the ground, we’re asking students, families and residents to put their best ideas forward for a name that everyone can be proud of," said Brian Doyle, Chair of the Board.

The project’s scope includes space for 536 students, a gymnasium and library, special education rooms, resource rooms, and four childcare rooms for 64 students. Construction is anticipated to be completed by the start of the school year in September 2028.

“We look forward to opening a new school where every learner can thrive in Paris,” says Dr. JoAnna Roberto, Chief Executive Officer. “Together, starting with the name, we can create a learning community grounded in achievement, that supports a strong sense of belonging and well-being.”

Grand Erie’s policy governing school naming offers considerations that may help inspire suggestions including local geography, nature, historical names or events, or an individual with an outstanding and enduring contribution to the public education community. Names should also reflect Grand Erie’s mission to build a culture of learning, well-being and belonging.

Public input will be received until August 18. A committee will review the submissions with input from staff, students, community members and stakeholder groups. The committee will bring the top recommendation to the Board of Trustees in late September followed by the Ministry of Education for approval.
