A few months ago, Brier Park Public School began something completely new. Students began training as a wrestling team, despite having no previous experience with the sport.
They had a wonderful mentor to help them get started, however.
"We were
fortunate to have a Para-Pan Am Judo Medalist, Alex Guillemette, visit
us to train with our students," said Principal Sandy Magnani. "Not only
did this give our students the skills needed to wrestle, but it also
instilled the confidence to embark on the sport."
Many students from grades 4 to 8 trained daily, including on weekends, in order to prepare for the Brant County tournament.
"Our students made us proud by demonstrating their skills and sportsmanship," said Magnani. "They came a long way in a short time."
There were 17 students in total who represented Brier Park PS, and 12 received medals. Top honours even went to two students - Lucius Lediard and Alex Stanley - both of whom received gold medals.
Brier Park PS thanks the dedicated team of staff and supporters who
made this first competition a rewarding and memorable experience.
