Waterford’s co-operative education program allows students to gain work experience in an area of their choice. This allows students to ‘test-drive’ a career before they leave secondary school. Co-operative education allows the students to earn credits that count toward their secondary school diploma. We offer many placements within the school, the local community, as well as in Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk. Students have had placements with mechanics, electricians, hospitals, welders, hairstylists, teachers, daycares, conservation centers, and many more! We have had students complete placements in local businesses, stores, and community foundations. For most students, co-operative education gives them the opportunity to make community connections and to gain experience that is different from the classroom experience. These connections and experiences have helped students gain a job or apprenticeship after secondary school!
C0-OPERATIVE EDUCATION AT WATERFORD DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL
Here at Waterford High School, we offer co-op courses to our senior students. Our courses can be tied into a student’s Specialist High Skills Major Program (SHSM) or it can be a part of the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP).
A SHSM program requires students to complete a 2-credit co-op course.
OYAP programs allow students to explore skilled trades and helps prepare them to successfully pursue a career. Students in grades 11 or 12 can gain training, through a co-op program, in an apprenticeship trade of interest.
Students will engage in mandatory health and safety training and workplace-based learning before heading out to their placements. Placements are monitored by a teacher throughout the semester.
