Winter Walk Week at King George School

Winter Walk Week Brings Our School Community Together
Our school had an exciting start to February as we celebrated Winter Walk Week from February 2-6. This special week was co-hosted with Grand Erie Public Health to encourage students and families to walk at least part of the way to school and enjoy the many benefits of winter walking. Walking in winter helps us stay active, enjoy the outdoors, and reduce traffic around the school. The highlight of the week was our outdoor celebration on February 3, held outside the main entrance before the morning bell. Students, staff, and parents/caregivers joined in, and the energy was amazing. Some of our favourite activities included:
We also invited students and families to vote on ideas that could help make walking to school safer, more fun, and more social.
What Our Community Chose
The voting results showed how much our school community values spending time together.
Many students said they would try Group Walking or Walk A Block because they enjoy spending more time with friends and family. Parents and caregivers shared the same feeling. We also heard other great ideas, like making the walk to school more fun and having something warm to drink when students arrive. The good news is that Harmony Church is already open before school at 8:15 AM, offering a warm place and free breakfast for students and families. No registration required. Just drop-in!
Throughout the rest of Winter Walk Week, students were encouraged to complete fun activity sheets for extra chances to win prizes. These included: · WinterWalkDay ISpy (K-3) | Ontario Active School Travel · WinterWalkDay ISpy (4-6) | Ontario Active School Travel · WinterWalkDay I Feel Activity | Ontario Active School Travel · WinterWalk Day Colouring Sheet | Ontario Active School Travel · WinterWalkDay Word Search | Ontario Active School Travel
From the photos, it’s clear that many of our King George students especially enjoyed walking and taking part in all the winter fun.
Keep the Momentum Going
Winter Walk Week may be over, but that doesn’t mean the walking has to stop. Walking to school -even part of the way- is a great way to start the day. So bundle up, head outside, and enjoy the fun of winter walking with friends and family.
