With the legalization of marijuana set to take effect this summer, parents will likely find the conversation with their children shifting. A timely event hosted by the Grand Erie Parent Involvement Committee aims to provide information, advice and resources to equip parents as they tackle this important topic.
The Impact of the Legalization of Marijuana on Families Information Panel will take place Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Waterford District High School (227 Main Street South, Waterford, Ontario). The event, which will be held in the cafeteria, will begin with a light dinner at 6 p.m. followed by the Information Panel and Q&A’s at 6:45 p.m.
“This is a great opportunity for all parents to have an open dialogue with their children,” said Sarah Nichol, Chair of the Grand Erie Parent Involvement Committee. “With the law changing, parents need accurate information and advice on how to talk with their kids about marijuana. It’s important for parents to know the risks as well as the supports available to them so they can help their kids make smart and healthy choices. We hope this session will be valuable for all Grand Erie parents.”
The Information Panel will offer advice and support on how to start the conversation with children about marijuana. It will also highlight resources available at the school, board and community level as well as provide an overview of how the Grand Erie District School Board will deal with the issue and new legislation this fall.
Panelists for the event include: Lindsay Speirs, Family Intervention Specialist, at St. Leonard’s Community Services; Tammy Burrows, Clinician, at Woodview Autism and Mental Health Services; Wayne Baker, Superintendent of Education, Grand Erie District School Board; and, Christine Bibby, Social Worker - Safe Schools, Grand Erie District School Board.
With a myriad of questions and concerns as legalization approaches, the Information Panel will address audience questions to ensure parents are knowledgeable of the latest information, research and best practices.
