Arpan Khera, a Grade 12 student at North Park Collegiate and Vocational School, has been awarded the Schulich Leaders Scholarship, one of Canada’s most prestigious undergraduate STEM scholarships, valued at $100,000.
Khera will attend McMaster University this fall where he plans to study mathematics and statistics. The Schulich Leaders Scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement.
Reflecting on his time at North Park, Khera credits the school community for helping him grow both personally and academically.
“When I started at North Park, I was pretty quiet, but I wanted to step outside my comfort zone, so I got involved in clubs and sports and met a lot of really smart people,” said Khera. “That encouraged me to focus even more on my academics, and my teachers challenged me to keep growing. There are so many intelligent people here at North Park, and being surrounded by them really helps you push yourself and grow.”
Throughout high school, Khera balanced strong academic performance with involvement in extracurricular activities and volunteering in the community, developing the skills and confidence that helped him earn the nationally competitive scholarship.
"I definitely gained a lot of leadership experience through sports," said Khera, who played for the varsity hockey team and with the Brantford Minor Hockey Association. "When your team is down, it's up to you to help them get back up."
Khera now joins a select group of Schulich Leaders from across Canada who are recognized for their potential to become innovators and leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through The Schulich Foundation, the entrance scholarships are awarded to only 100 secondary school graduates enrolling in STEM undergraduate programs at 20 partner universities in Canada.
Khera’s accomplishments reflect Grand Erie’s mission to learn, lead, and inspire, highlighting the powerful impact of academic curiosity, leadership development, and the inspiration to make a positive change in the world.
