Getting to Know Grand Erie is a new weekly feature that puts the spotlight on one of the many Grand Erie staff members working towards the goal of Success for Every Student. The Q&A series brings the staff member into focus by sharing – in their own words – the lessons they’ve learned in leadership, teamwork, and perseverance. Do you know someone who should be featured? Let us know!

Getting-to-Know-Lisa_1000px.jpgWhat’s the best part of your job?

I love the variety involved in my job. Some tasks are the same, but every day can still look very different.

What was your first job, and what did it teach you?

My first unofficial job was babysitting. My first “real” job was as a student page (shelver) at my high school, Brantford Collegiate Institute and Vocational School. (I was a page at my elementary school, too, but that was a volunteer position.) I learned there’s a whole world of volunteer and job opportunities out there. You just have to look. And hopefully find something that you love as well as are good at.

What motivates you?

Feeling like I’m helpful and useful.

What’s your favourite thing about working in Grand Erie?

I love the people I work with. Most people in the school system are there because they want to make a difference, and it shows.

How does your role contribute to Success for Every Student?

I’m the switchboard operator for the head office at the Education Centre, so I get a lot of different questions, from a variety of people, including parents and staff. I try to match those questions up with the experts who will have the answers. I’m also responsible for the organization of Grand Erie’s courier procedures, which ensures that vital materials, documents and resources get to where they need to be.

What’s a skill or talent you possess that might surprise people?

I took belly dancing for a number of years. I wouldn’t say it’s a skill or talent though. And even after not working in a library for more than eight years, I probably still have most of the Dewey Decimal System memorized!

Best advice you received?

“It is what it is.” There’s no point in stressing out over trying to change those things that can’t be changed.

Best advice you have given?

Do your best, and just keep swimming.

What’s been your most important lesson learned during the pandemic?

Be kind. Everyone is struggling in their own ways. Try and make things better, whenever you can. But also, be kind to yourself. It’s okay to not be okay sometimes.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love movies. I miss being able to go to the theatre. I do need to find more hobbies though… I recently put together a puzzle for the first time in years. It depicted sushi and cats, two of my favourite things.
