The Valley Heights club "Purple and White" celebrated their win in the Special Effects category at the Norfolk County Fair on October 4, 2016.
Each year, the Norfolk County Fair holds a Young Canada Day at the fairgrounds in Simcoe, Ontario every year in October. The events run for high school students and includes events such as girls and boys tug of war, road races, cheerleading, cheering, behaviour and of course special effects.
Five neighbouring schools compete against Valley Heights for the win of each of these events and also for the overall win. It is a fun way for each student to get involved with their school, show some school spirit and cheer on their school.
The Purple and White club is involved in creating a backdrop for the special effects competition at the fair. Each year about 20-25 students come out in the first month of school to prepare for this competition and volunteer their time after school everyday.
The students in this club work together to build structures and paint backdrops using only school colours that comply with a chosen theme, this years being The 70's: Psychedelic Scooby. This club is special because it brings about school pride because of the students from all different grades that to help compete against neighbouring schools and show off the artistic talents our small school has to offer.
Winning the special effects competition was a pride-filled moment for the students and teachers at Valley Heights as a lot of our neighbouring schools we compete against have double to triple the amount of kids in their school.
To be able to WOW the others with our outstanding designs and backdrops was an extraordinary accomplishment for our small group of students. It was a very special feeling to have teachers, students and parents from other schools complementing our club on what an amazing job we had done for the special effects part of the competition.
Go Bears Go!
