We know that moving our bodies is good for our well-being, but what to do when the dreary winter months settle in and it’s harder to stay active? For students at Rainham Central School, the answer is Zumba.
Zumba is a fast-paced, easy-to-follow exercise routine that combines elements of hip-hop, salsa, merengue, and mambo dance. Since January, the dance has taken over at Rainham, with students in Kindergarten through to Grade 8 participating weekly in the gymnasium. The dance routines are led by a local Zumba instructor, and adapted to suit all levels of fitness and ability. Students have fun mastering the moves, and the enthusiasm has spread throughout the school.
Much like gym class, each Zumba session begins with a warm-up song, and ends with a number that allows students to wind down. Once students feel comfortable, they have the opportunity to join the instructor on stage and help lead the rest of the students. The activity gets hearts pumping, boosts energy levels, and allows everyone to refocus more effectively afterwards.
Zumba sessions at Rainham Central School are continuing until the end of March.
