In late February, Grand Erie celebrated Pink Shirt Day. With humble beginnings supporting one bullied teenager in Nova Scotia more than a decade ago, the day has evolved into a yearly tradition among students across the country and around the world to take a united stand against bullying.
At Grandview Central School in Dunnville, staff and students joined other students across Grand Erie by donning the colour pink, and sending the united message that bullying will not be tolerated.
“The message of the day is, ‘Stop Bullying. Take a Stand. Be the change,’” said Grandview Central School Principal Dave Gervais. “It’s a clear reflection of our community’s values of inclusiveness and equity, and the importance of creating safe and supportive environments for students, families, and staff.”
Grandview students and staff also participated in lessons and activities which further highlighted the importance of the day. As Gervais sees it, the day is a call to action to treat everyone with the respect and support they deserve.
“It’s really about not only talking the talk, but also walking the walk,” said Gervais. “It serves as a reminder to make sure our words and actions reflect this inclusiveness.”
Grandview Central School’s playground, hallways, and classrooms were a pink wave, with many students wearing this year’s special Pink Shirt Day t-shirts ordered through the Boys and Girls Club of Brantford, and some staff and students even wearing the colour head-to-toe. Many thanks to the Boys and Girls Club of Brantford for assisting in making this day truly pink.
