Dunnville Secondary School stays up all night for a good cause

Caption: Students take part in 12-hour event raising funds for Canadian Cancer Society

Dunnville Secondary School hosted its first ever Relay for Life event recently, with approximately 70 students taking part in the 12-hour relay lasting from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. the next day. Relay for Life brings together teams to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those who've passed away from the disease, and commits to raising funds to fight all types of cancer.

"We had survivors and individuals who are currently battling cancer join us by leading students on the first lap of the relay," said Dunnville Secondary School Principal Jayne Chalmers. "That was a powerful way to unite us in the fight against cancer."

For a first-time effort, the events was a tremendous success, exceeding its fundraising goals, and rallying the Dunnville community behind it. More than 20 community partners sponsored the event, and students raised $13,688 -- more than double the original goal of $6000. The funds will go to the Canadian Cancer Society to help support a variety of programs including research, support groups, ride programs, and other local activities.

The night put the fun in fundraising, with teams representing Olympic countries, and awarded prizes for best costumes. The evening included a variety of activities such as a hair donation ceremony, a scavenger hunt, team games, Zumba, movies, and board games while other teams passed the baton as they completed laps. There was no shortage of food, including a wrap-up breakfast during the closing ceremonies.

Dunnville Secondary School extends its congratulations to student chair Britt Little and teacher advisors Ms. Dykstra and Ms. Vickers on a very entertaining and successful inaugural Relay event.
