Princess Elizabeth was extremely lucky as they received a visit from the Brant Taletellers Guild. The storytellers came to the school to talk to the students and spin yarns of amazing adventures and escapades and to foster enjoyment and appreciation of oral storytelling. The students at Princess Elizabeth very much enjoyed it.
When they returned to class, Princess Elizabeth students were able to stimulate their communication skills, work on developing their confidence and self-esteem and encourage each other’s thinking and cognitive skills. By exploring a range of literacy concepts in an imaginative and enjoyable way, Princess Elizabeth students not only shared a love of language but were actively encouraged to develop their own storytelling talents.
The Storytellers that visited Princess Elizabeth reinforced the teachers' efforts to foster a love of literature by complementing almost every component of the literacy efforts in the building. They showed that Storytelling is communication, an interactive art that uses gestures, facial expression and voice to define and enrich the language and meaning of stories. New vocabulary is readily acquired while listening to a tale accompanied by gestures and facial expressions; words such as “spend thrift” and “ne’er do well” are easily understood in the context of an oral story but may be difficult to convey through explanation alone.
