Simcoe Composite’s blue and white athletic family grew by one more team this fall.
With a rich history in cheerleading and a strong school spirit for Simcoe Composite, educational assistant Tonya Borghese thought it was time to start the SCS Special Needs Sabre Cheer Star Team. After surveying her students, the interest demonstrated a shared sense of pride.
There are now nine students that make up the blue and white cheer team. With the help of experienced cheerleader Berkley Harvey, their routines have been practiced and perfected, and the team has now been entered into their first competition at the Norfolk Secondary Schools Athletic Association (NSSAA) for December 9.
After that, the Sabre Cheer Star team will be heading to three more competitions, and will also be featured in the 2016 Young Canada Day event at the Norfolk County Fair.
While all of this has been an exciting ride for the Cheer Stars, transportation costs to each of the competitions remains an obstacle that stands in their way.
In order to raise funds for the team to travel to these events, the Sabres have started an online art auction on Facebook where people can place their bid on art created by Simcoe Composite School students.
“I’ve noticed that there can be so much negativity on social media,” said Borghese. “This auction could be a positive outlook and it’s already exceeded my expectations.”
All of the proceeds from the auction will go directly to transportation to the events. Opening bids range from $15 - $40.
The Facebook auction will be open until November 20, and all winners can pick up their prizes on Sunday, November 22 at the Holiday Marketplace at Simcoe Composite School.
If you would like to donate a piece of art to be included in the auction, please contact Tanya Borghese through the Facebook event.
