Want to Make a Difference? Consider Running for Student Trustee

Grand Erie District School Board recognizes and values the need for strong student voices to guide the work it does. That’s why each year Grand Erie selects three Student Trustees to represent students from our jurisdiction. To ensure the diversity of student voices are heard and reflected, one Student Trustee is elected from the northern area of the Board (Brant County/City of Brantford), one is elected from the southern area of the Board (Haldimand County/Norfolk County), and one is elected from the Indigenous student communities within Grand Erie.

Student Trustees must be senior-division secondary students, and registered full-time during the year for which they are running. They are involved in their communities, passionate, and have demonstrated leadership capabilities. The position of Student Trustee is a challenging – but also rewarding – opportunity. Some of the responsibilities include communication between Board members and students throughout Grand Erie schools, and regular attendance at scheduled meetings of the Board. The term runs from August 1 to July 31.

If you’re interested in submitting an application to run for the position of Student Trustee, the first step is to apply in writing to your school Principal by Friday, January 17, 2020. Each application should include specific references to the qualifications outlined in Section 2 of the Board’s Bylaw. Successful applicants will then attend the Student Election meeting on February 20, 2020. Service as a Student Trustee may be eligible for either a co-op credit or community service hours, with the approval of the Student Trustee’s principal and co-op teacher. Students who have questions about the process or the responsibilities entailed in the position of Student Trustee can ask their Principal.
