Grand Erie Families,
Though the holiday season is often equated with warmth, joy, festivity and happy moments with family and friends, for many this is not the case. School Mental Health Ontario has prepared ideas for students to practice self-care over the winter break.
A reminder that the winter break is from December 22 to January 2. We look forward to welcoming students back in the new year on January 5.
Last week, EQAO assessment scores were released and our Grade 3, 6, and 9 scores significantly increased in reading, writing and math. These positive outcomes demonstrate that every student can learn and reach their potential. I’m proud of the educators, whose passion continues to shape environments where students learn, lead, and inspire.
Recently, more than 1,600 Grand Erie students attended the Brantford Bulldogs inaugural Skills and Learning Day. The event brought together students in Grades 4 to 6 from 17 schools for a day of teamwork, leadership and sport.
Course selection for high school has started. The involvement of parents and caregivers is a vital part of the formula for success as young people navigate their next steps. Watch how you can get involved.
Effective September 2026, Technology Hubs will be established at Cayuga Secondary School, North Park Collegiate & Vocational School and Simcoe Composite School. Each location will gradually offer a broader range of technology courses and provide students access to both hard technology and soft technology courses.
Two McKinnon Park Secondary School students recently signed separate scholarship offers to attend university, where they will continue to develop their skills in basketball and soccer.
Last month, Pauline Johnson’s Indigenous Student Association was honoured with a Peace Medal, awarded by the YMCA Hamilton Burlington Brantford, to recognize individuals and groups who, without any special resources, status, wealth or position, demonstrate a commitment to the values of peace through contributions made within their local, national or global communities.
In the new year, the Innovation Hub @ Grand Erie will host a free Family Night. On January 29, 2026, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., families with students in Kindergarten to Grade 3 are invited to explore, play and create through interactive stations, collaborative challenges, and playful learning experiences. RSVP Now.
At the final board meeting of 2025, the Board of Trustees elected Brian Doyle as Chair and Susan Gibson as Vice-Chair. Their leadership, partnership, and vision will guide our shared efforts in the year ahead. I also had the opportunity to present the Director’s Annual Report, Excellence in Motion, outlining just some of our achievements. Every classroom, school, program and partnership contribute greatly to our mission.
At Grand Erie, our focus is to support and enhance numeracy and literacy learning in the classroom and at home through a variety of engaging, interactive tools. Each month, we have compiled math resources and literacy resources to foster your child’s learning and support their growth.
As temperatures dip below freezing and to prepare you for our return in January, we are reminding families of its operational plans for dealing with hazardous winter weather.
I hope you find time to enjoy the simple joys of the season with loved ones. If you’re participating in school or community events this month, please tag @granderiedsb on Instagram and use #SpiritofGivingGrandErie.
Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy every moment.
