Simcoe Composite Students and Teachers Battle for Bragging Rights on the Ice

Just before the winter holidays in December, an epic hockey showdown between teachers and students ensued at a rink in Simcoe, with bragging rights on the line.

The annual game has become a tradition at Simcoe Composite School, with staff facing off against a team of Grade 12 students each year, building comradery and contributing to well-being in the process. This year’s student team consisted of male and female students with a wealth of hockey experience who have been waiting patiently for the past four years for their opportunity to upset the teacher team.

“With just 13 school days before exams, the game is a chance to bond outside of the classroom and build school spirit,” said Darren Duff, principal at Simcoe Composite School. “It also gives teachers the chance to impart one last lesson before the holidays – if they win.”

The result? Wisdom and experience skated to victory over the energy of youth.

Despite spirited coaching from behind the student bench, the teacher team managed a hard-fought victory with a final score of 10-4. The teachers were led to victory by former principal and veteran coach Bob Foster‘s solid and steady leadership. The teacher’s offensive outpouring was lead by the smooth skating snipers – Greg Pajor and Paul Davidson. A huge goal was also registered by vice-principal John Della Fortuna who slid the puck into the slot from the point.

The player of the game, however, was music teacher Kevin Murphy, who stood strong between the pipes. It had been three years since Murphy strapped on the pads, but he was the difference, repeatedly stopping the offense attacks by the fast-skating student team.

Murphy’s play not only earned him first star and the admiration of both staff and students alike, he also earned a new nickname: the Brick Wall. When asked about his stellar performance, Murphy laughed, “It’s a lot of fun, but it’s also scary because they’ve got young legs and I’m just trying to breathe.”
