J.L. Mitchener Public School to host fundraising event in support of new play area for students with autism

J.L. Mitchener Public School in Cayuga has innovative plans to support its Autism class, and hopes a fundraising dinner and information fair in early April will help realize the goal of an outdoor play area that addresses the unique needs of children with autism.

“Children who are on the autism spectrum perceive the world differently, and are often overwhelmed by certain stimuli including loud noises and crowds of people,” said Kerry Corbett, teacher at J.L. Mitchener Public School, and one of the organizers of the event. “We know that play serves a vital purpose for all children, and so modifying outdoor play areas to best fit the needs of students on the spectrum ensures they’re able to benefit from the physical activity, active exploration, and imaginative problem solving that takes place through play.”

The fundraiser will include an information fair curated especially for parents with a child on the autism spectrum, bringing together government agencies, businesses, and service organizations specializing in autism. A spaghetti dinner is also part of the evening event.

Grand Erie’s Multi-Year Plan includes Environment as one of its key pillars, and strives to create learning spaces that reflect current teaching and learning needs, while building a culture of care and inclusiveness for all students. The fundraiser is being spearheaded by J.L. Mitchener teachers and parents, and tickets to the event are $10 per person, $5 for students, or $20 for the whole family. All of the proceeds will support the construction costs of the new play area.
