Grand Erie Seeks Community Input for Name of New Dunnville Elementary School

Grand Erie District School Board is looking to the community for suggestions in naming its new Dunnville elementary school in Haldimand County. The new school, which is currently being built, is slated to welcome its first students this fall.

“It’s really exciting to see the progress of construction,” said Charlotte Morphet, principal at Fairview Avenue Public School, which is located next to the site of the new school. “Naming the new elementary school is a way for our community to come together and build anticipation for the start of something new in 2018-19.”

There are guidelines in place for choosing a new school name in Grand Erie. Those considerations include: local historical events or geographical connections, the name of the street on which the school is located, the name of the district the school serves, and recognition of an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to education.

“Community is an important pillar of Grand Erie’s Multi-Year Plan,” said Tom Fitzsimmons, principal of Grandview Central Public School. “Having the community’s input will ensure the new school is a reflection of all of the students, staff, and parents we will serve this fall.”

The new Dunnville elementary school will bring together students from both Grandview Central Public School and Fairview Avenue Public School following the closure of both schools in June.

Those interested in suggesting a name for the new school can email info@granderie.ca. In submitting a suggested name for the school, participants are asked to include their name and contact information as well as a brief explanation of the rationale for their suggestion. The deadline to submit a school name is Monday, May 7.
